Branding your home

You've heard of Costal, Farmhouse and Maximalism, but I want to introduce you to 5 lesser-known styles.

So I have a theory on how to make home decor choices easier, like significantly easier. It's a brain hack. I'm hacking our brains. Girls, grab your drinks, grab your Pinterest boards. We're hacking baby!

As a graphic designer by profession, I’ve always had a passion for home design, even before I transitioned to being a stay-at-home mom. I love a good brand, you know. I started realizing that in my home, things felt off. Some things were working well with each other and were having a good conversation. But other pieces weren't fitting. They weren't giving what they were supposed to be giving.

I was so frustrated. I am DESIGNER, what do you mean I can't pick out a dang wall color? What was happening? What was I doing wrong? Then it clicked, I wasn't using my graphic design knowledge in my own home...

Branding my home, so simple! Yet it's so me not to put this together. But I realized that if I branded my home, if I gave my home a theme, I'd give myself the structure/brand guidelines to make those hard design choices simple.

What is a Brand Hilary??

I'm glad you asked. Branding isn't just about the logo or the colors used; it's how the brand is perceived by not only customers but also by internal members. Branding is a process that involves strategy, visual identity, and communication tone. Think of your favorite brand. What is the standout vibe you get from it? Friendly, luxury, innovative? Do they speak as leaders or enthusiasts? What's the color scheme? All these things work together to create a brand that generates trust with people who will then, on their own, promote how much they love the brand simply because they love it.

  • Brand Identity: The visible elements such as logos, color palettes, and typography.

  • Brand Strategy: The long-term plan for developing a successful brand, defining the target audience, purpose, and positioning.

  • Brand Voice: The tone and language used to communicate with customers

How to Brand Your Home
Tell a story

It doesn’t have to be your real life. But what’s the vibe you want to give when you come in, like an Alexandria townhouse with exposed brick, charming, but obviously the person who lives here is whimsical but likes iron and mauve! Lean into storytelling with a room,

You have to build your background, foreground, and middle ground. Layering. Individually, things can look just bland, but when everything starts coming together, they end up creating a story. Just like an outfit or a brand. It’s not just one element that makes a room work; it’s how they converse in the room to tell the story. Big or small, the choices reflect your story or desired story to all who see it

For me, words don’t always hold weight when it comes to design. But words in the form of a story will get my mind fully envisioning the room. But that’s essentially branding. It’s not what something tells you, it’s what it makes you feel and what it actually does for you. Does the space work? Is it functional? Does it make you feel the way you want? If not, tell yourself that story. Write a story about how the room would work. Include the small details.

But what story?

Tell a story about how, on the best day, your room would function like an author. What does it feel like, smell like, what do you touch, what catches your eye? How would you or someone else experience your space? Do they flop on your in over side lounge chair and sigh in relief? Do they make a beeline for your dessert in your glass-domed pedestal? Do you languidly spread across your white linen duvet, armed with nothing but your drink silk robe and facial mask, ready to lock into your show?

Choosing a Theme

side bar** Before you get turned off by the idea of a theme, it doesn't have to be the 90's version with a full strawberry kitchen!

It could be a house you'd see on Magnolia Network, or a fashion designer's NYC flat. We want to get a whole image going, baby! Dream away!

Before diving into naming each room, consider the overall theme you want for your home. Are you feeling modern chic, Versailles glam, or a seaside retreat? Having a clear theme will guide your naming process. For example, if your home has a coastal vibe, you might want to name rooms after nautical terms or your favorite beach spot. This will not just give your home personality but will also provide a framework for your decoration choices.

Give it a Name

When it comes to decorating your home, the first step begins long before you reach for your paintbrush or buy new furniture. It starts with a name! Stick with me! Naming your home and its individual rooms helps create that cohesive vibe that sets the tone for the entire space. It’s like giving each room its own personality within your overall theme, making it easier to choose colors, furnishings, and decor that complement each other.

Be Creative with Descriptive Names

After settling on a theme, it’s time to get creative! Descriptive/whimsical names add charm and fun to each space. Instead of calling a simple living room “Living Room,” why not refer to it as the “Lighthouse Lounge” or “Le Jardin”? Similarly, transform your bedroom into “The Dream Suite” or your dining area into “Stonehill Banquet Hall.” These creative names will draw attention and spark curiosity, making your house feel truly unique.

The goal is to evoke imagery that makes it easy for you to make design choices. My house is themed as the Chateau de Stonebridge. For me, I envision beautiful gardens, lots of natural stone, brick, and metal scroll work ect. It gives me a story to tell within my home. Within that overarching theme, I break my rooms down. I renamed my kitchen the Galley because it's a short, long kitchen.

Then I work on imagining what a galley kitchen in Chateau de Stonebridge would look like. My walls are a mulled red wine color; I have a French arch mirror over my sink. My tacky tile with mosaic fruit actually fit it when I reframed how I looked at it. I added rubbed bronze handles. So it's all coming together under my theme. My theme and names give me a clear guide on what would go into the kitchen.

Conclusion: Your Home Already Has a Vibe—Now You Get to Lean into it

“Branding your home” isn’t about creating the perfect space, or following an impossible design rulebook. It’s about giving your brain something to hold onto—an intentional direction—so you can make the best choice based on your home’s brand.

When you have a theme and a name, you stop picking things randomly and start choosing things that belong. You’re not just buying a lamp or painting a wall; you’re adding a character to the story your home is telling. And that’s why it gets so much easier—because the question isn’t “Do I like this?” it’s “Does this fit my vibe? Does it support the story I want to live in?”

Stop the overthinking and let yourself dream a little. Choose a theme that makes you actually feel something, give your home a name, and start looking at your space like a story you’re writing on purpose. One room at a time, one choice at a time, you’ll be shocked how quickly your Home’s Brand take place.
